countdown: our wedding is in 26 days! all along i'd thought that the little green and white paper i had in my drawer was my birth certificate, b/c that's what my parents had always believed it was. but no. turns out it was my birth registration. that sucked, b/c we needed our birth certificates to apply for our marriage license, at least in wayne county. until last week both our drivers licenses had oakland county addresses, and in oakland county you can apply for a marriage license using a passport. we just had to change our addresses after almost a year, huh. plus, since i was born in detroit my birth certificate is at the detroit department of health, not the wayne county clerk's office (where we apply for the marriage license). getting my birth certificate by mail would take 3-4 weeks; clearly, that wasn't an option. luckily i got out of work at 1:30 today and drove to detroit to get it. the place was packed! i had trouble finding a parking spot, and then once i got inside the room was filled. i can't believe that many ppl were there. i know what *i* needed my birth certificate for... but i stood there for an hour looking around in boredom, wondering why everyone else was there. it sucked. but now i have an official sealed copy of my birth certificate, and we can go ahead and apply for the marriage license. isn't it funny... you want to get married and say your vows in front of friends and family... and there are all these legal hoops you have to go through? but at least now i finally know what my real birth certificate looks like.
